Petrified Forest National Park
More than 200 million years ago, flourishing trees and vegetation covered much of this area of Northeastern Arizona. Then volcanic lava destroyed the forest, and the remains were embedded into the ash. Erosion set the logs free millions of years later, revealing the petrified wood – now compressed into quartz – that Arizona visitors gather to see. Drive, hike, or bike through this breath-taking destination and see how millions of years of sediment and water pressure have changed wood into colorful fossils. Don’t miss it!
Painted Desert
Hike Blue Mesa Trail, see the petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock, and thrill to the panoramic views of the red, orange, pink, and purple rocks at Kachina Point. The Rainbow Forest Museum at Painted Desert includes exhibits of prehistoric animals.
Barringer Meteorite Crater
The best preserved meteorite impact site on Earth is located right off of I-40 in nearby Winslow AZ and is a mesmerizing site to see. Nearly a mile across and more than 550 feet deep, the crevasse is the result of a meteor hitting the planet about 50,000 years ago. In addition to the impact site, there is an interactive discovery museum, a gift and rock shop, and an astronaut memorial park located at the crater rim.
Navajo Nation
The Dine’ People were here long before the arrival of European settlers. The Navajo Nation shares its culture, arts, and history. Plus hiking, fishing, museums, gift shops and casinos!
Hidden Cove Golf Course
This 9-hole golf course in Holbrook, Arizona is open to the public. Hidden Cove Golf Course measures 3269 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 115 and a 35.6 USGA rating. The course features 3 sets of tees for different skill levels.

Stewart’s Rock Shop
Since it’s a big no-no to take any petrified wood from the park, you can get some at Stewart’s Rock Shop, 13 miles east of Holbrook. It’s part trading post, part garage sale sitting in a strange folk art sculpture garden. They sell meteorites, dinosaur bones, tree stumps, bookends, and jewelry made from petrified wood. The property also has ostriches (with eggs for sale), sun-blasted vintage cars, and quirky dinosaur sculptures like a T-Rex with a mannequin hanging out of its mouth. This place is so awesomely odd with a tinge of creepiness it makes it worth a stop.
